With KMU-innovativ, the BMBF promotes cutting-edge research in important future-oriented areas. Funding within the technology fields is open to all topics. The decisive factors are the excellence and degree of innovation of the project as well as high exploitation opportunities. Funding is provided for research projects in fields of technology that have particular priority for Germany:
Among other things, costs and expenses for personnel, research equipment and contract research that are directly related to the projects are funded.
Funding is generally provided as a non-repayable grant. Applicant companies can receive funding of up to 50% of the eligible, project-related costs. Research institutions and universities are funded up to 100%.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are eligible to apply. Collaborative projects between one or more SMEs, universities, research institutions and other SMEs as well as regional authorities are also eligible for funding. However, at least one SME must be involved in each project. The respective project should also be initiated and coordinated by an SME.
A significant proportion of the funding must benefit the participating SMEs. The benefits and exploitation of the project results should also largely lie with the participating SMEs. Individual or joint projects without the participation of SMEs are therefore excluded from funding.
The application procedure has a two-stage structure. In the first stage, project outlines can be submitted at any time.
The evaluation deadlines for the sketches are April 15 and October 15.
In the second stage, formal applications for funding are submitted by each individual partner in the network following a request from the project management organization. The details of the funding are regulated in the respective funding announcement for the individual funding priorities.
