The Central Innovation Program for SMEs (ZIM) is a nationwide, technology- and sector-agnostic funding program to strengthen the innovative power and competitiveness of SMEs.
Funding is provided for research and development (R&D) projects that lead to the development of innovative products, processes or technical services, enable the applicants to carry out market-oriented research and development and involve a significant technical and economic risk.
The individual R&D projects variant only takes place for one applicant without a cooperation partner.
Funding is provided as a non-repayable grant. The funding rates are 25 - 45% of the eligible project costs, depending on the size, age and location of the applicant. The maximum eligible project costs amount to 690,000 euros.

Commercial enterprises based in Germany are eligible to apply if they have fewer than 500 employees (including affiliated or partner companies).
The technological innovation content, correspondingly high technical risks and good market opportunities of the funded R&D projects are essential for approval.
In the run-up to the ZIM R&D project, feasibility can be promoted with a subsidized study.
Following the ZIM R&D project, additional market launch services can also be funded.
